Quantum Resistance Was Crypto’s Hottest Sector During the May Selloff

Quantum-resistant cryptocurrencies were the standout performers of May, outpacing Bitcoin (BTC) by 59.3% for the month even as the broader market sold off, according to Binance Research.

The rally centered on Zcash (ZEC), which surged past $690 in mid-May and overtook Cardano (ADA) to become the 9th-largest cryptocurrency by market value.

A Down Month That Rewarded the Quantum Trade

May was a losing month for most of crypto. The total market capitalization fell 3.3% to $2.55 trillion, and Bitcoin dropped about 4.8%. Binance Research tied the slide to macro pressure.

“The Strait of Hormuz disruption graduated from a transitory supply shock to a structural inflation problem, and digital assets were impacted as a result of the rise in real interest rates,” the report read.

Bitcoin tested its 200-day moving average, and the short-term holder realized price, then failed to hold. Hawkish Fed signaling and persistent inflation drove spot ETF outflows.

Data from SoSoValue showed that $2.43 billion was pulled from Bitcoin ETFs in May. This marked the largest monthly inflow since November 2025.

Against that backdrop, capital rotated into momentum-driven narratives. The quantum-resistance basket outperformed Bitcoin by 59.3% month-over-month and 26.3% year-to-date, Binance Research said.

The index is heavily concentrated in Zcash, which carries roughly 88% of its weight. Algorand (ALGO) and Starknet (STRK) make up the remainder.

What Is Fueling the Bet

Zcash gave the narrative a concrete catalyst in May. At the Consensus Miami conference, Zcash Open Development Lab CEO Josh Swihart said quantum-recoverable wallets would ship within a month.

Swihart also added that the network would reach full post-quantum status within 12 to 18 months. Meanwhile, the theme extends beyond Zcash. Algorand rallied earlier this year after Google cited its post-quantum architecture, and Starknet adopted a similar approach at its base layer.

The quantum threat is no longer treated as distant. Binance Research said the risk has moved from a distant concern to a factor that large allocators now closely track.

Ethereum (ETH) co-founder Vitalik Buterin puts the odds of a break by 2030 at about 20%. In addition, Charles Hoskinson sees above a 50% chance that quantum computing will become a genuine threat to crypto before 2033.

Nonetheless, the trade has cooled since. ZEC has fallen roughly 31% over the past month to near $423. It now sits around 15th by market value, though it stays ahead of ADA. The coming months will tell whether the quantum-resistant trade will regain momentum.
