Taiko’s Based Rollup Summit Brings Together Ethereum Leaders

Taiko, the first based rollup scaling Ethereum, hosted the inaugural Based Rollup Summit, bringing together leaders, developers, and enthusiasts from the Ethereum community to discuss and debate the role of based rollup development in allowing the next generation of Ethereum growth.

The Summit, held at San Francisco’s Exploratorium, the Museum of Technology, science, and arts, aimed to educate those invested in the Ethereum community and create a platform for builders to share what they expect from based rollup development going forward.

“This is a unique opportunity to learn about the topics that will be key for the future of Ethereum,” Taiko’s Chief Operating Officer Joaquin Mendes told the audience in his opening address.

Mendes unpacked the basics of based rollups to ensure everyone was on the same page before each talk, panel, and demo shared more detailed insights.

The day’s discussions varied, from the deep dives into based rollup design to insightful discussions on wide-ranging topics like artificial intelligence and the future of Ethereum as a whole.

During a panel on Verifiability Proving AI, Professor Dan Boneh, Co-founder at Stanford Blockchain Research, shared how zero-knowledge cryptography and developments will play a key role in how we interact with artificial intelligence in the future.

“The answer is provenance. There is this standard content providence and authenticity, and the idea is that every content will have a signature saying where it came from, and your camera will have a secret key to sign it,” he said. He explained that zero-knowledge cryptography will play a key role in providing these signatures without divulging details.

When it came to based rollups, the word of the day was ‘preconfirmations.’ This technical development aims to make transaction finality on based rollups faster, enabling them to compete with the current rollup stack.

During a panel on whether to be based or not, Taiko Engineer Cecilia Zhang explained, “Being based is a very natural engineering development. If we see [the state of] fragmentation now, it comes naturally that this is the right thing to do.”

Echoing this natural progression, in the best case scenario for Ethereum during a panel on the Future of Ethereum and Based Rollups, Vitalik Buterin, Founder of Ethereum, said his best case scenario would be “an Ethereum-based social network that’s open, free, and free of monopolist gatekeepers while also having good content to experience. Let’s use the 10,000 TPS projects like Taiko will bring us, and make it happen.”

This was met with loud applause and support from the audience.

The day of technical details culminated in a round-up discussion on a look beyond the code to what can be expected from 2025.

“I think it’s the acceleration of frontier cryptography research. Over the past few years, we’ve seen ZK really take off, and now we have Zk provers and all of the infrastructure… It’s really exciting to see how entrepreneurs can build businesses out of these new cryptographic primitives and push forward this new verifiable internet,” said Jay Yu, President at Stanford Blockchain Club and Associate at Pantera.

The day wrapped up with participants catching up and already looking forward to the next Based Rollup Summit which will take place during EthCC in Cannes in July 2025.
